Students in Mrs. Kirk’s second grade Language Arts Cambridge class recently had the chance to experience the art of poetry through the use of rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, and imagery. They examined different poetry types including rhyming, haiku, and acrostic. After this lesson, the students were given the opportunity to create their own poems using the information and patterns discussed in class. After the class completed their writings, the students compiled their original works of poetry into a book.
The “newly published Cambridge Poets” extended an invitation to the first grade Cambridge class to come enjoy a poetry reading presented by the students of Mrs. Kirk’s class. This event gave the second graders an opportunity to practice their speaking skills in front of a wider audience. Student presenters read poems aloud using their created rhythms and personal expression. The first graders got to experience unique poetry, practice their listening skills and audience expectations, and learn from their fellow Mandarin Sharks.
